This weekend I drove to NYC with my assistant Kevin for the 30th PhotoPlus Expo held at Jacob K. Javits Convention Center as previous years. Besides excellent hands-on experience with traditional Canon and Nikon gears, I was deeply impressed by the new Sony A7 and A7R, both of which had unbelievable photography powers inside and out, including full frame D800E CMOS sensor without AA filters, fast focus speed, easy dials individually set up for aperture, shutter speed and ISO, amazing high ISO performance (up to ISO 25,600) as well as the light weight and the slick designs, all of which immediately left other mirror-less gears like Fuji x100s in shame. We also put our hands on a few other gears, including the new Leica M240, Leica Monochrome, Zeiss ZE and ZF manual focus lenses and some Sigma art lenses such as the outstanding 35 f/1.4. At the westcott booth, I bumped into the demos by great portrait photographer James Schmelzer who shared some excellent tips of maneuvering softbox in a variety of ways. On the Nikon theater platform, Nikon D600 campainger and Documentary photographer Steve Simon introduced his focus tricks with audiences. And I was also fortunate enough to catch the last chapter of Master Photographer and Nikon Ambassador Joe McNally's speed light demos.
